(Alzenau) The European Cargo Alliance of International Freight Forwarders AG, short ELVIS, will soon offer its partners the opportunity to compensate for emissions generated during truck transports. A platform has been developed to collect greenhouse gas emissions. To offset these, so-called CO2 certificates from climate protection projects are purchased. Customers who take advantage of this offer benefit from an improved climate balance, thus creating a competitive advantage. After a successful pilot phase, the project is now being rolled out across the entire alliance.
Transport Industry Largely Responsible for Greenhouse Gas Emissions
“The transport industry is inevitably responsible for a significant portion of global greenhouse gas emissions. We cannot avoid the resulting climate damage, but at least we can compensate for it,” says Jochen Eschborn, CEO of the European Cargo Alliance of International Freight Forwarders AG. The demand for climate-friendly transport solutions is currently increasing exponentially. Therefore, ELVIS sees a clear competitive advantage in corresponding offers and now wants to win partners for climate-neutral transports. “By purchasing CO2 certificates, investments are made in various climate protection projects in developing and emerging countries that bind carbon dioxide in the atmosphere or avoid further emissions, thus reducing environmental burdens,” explains Eschborn.
Search for Innovations
According to Eschborn, the search for innovations in the transport and logistics sector is an essential part of the alliance’s self-understanding: “We have always examined new developments and offers in the market to support our partners in this important but time-consuming work.” This also applies to topics such as environmental protection and specifically the growing demand for climate-friendly solutions. “We want to lead by example and empower our partners to offer and market this value-added service early on,” says Eschborn. It was also crucial to align the own processes at the central hub in Knüllwald sustainably. The hub has been operating climate-neutral for a few days now. For climate compensation, ELVIS has created a digital solution that allows partners to upload large amounts of tour data from the in-house system to a platform. “The tool automatically determines how many climate certificates need to be purchased to offset the emissions,” says Eschborn. With the push of a button, all transports are compensated.
Offer Available Immediately
The offer is available immediately and for all ELVIS partners. “With the label ‘Climate Neutral Transports’, companies can tap into new customer segments and position themselves as innovative and committed logistics service providers,” says Eschborn. For customer outreach, the cargo alliance provides appropriate informational materials and offers on-site support for customer discussions.
