Nov 24, 2020 at 4:35 PMThe Volvo FE Electric has been delivered as the first fully electric series vehicle in the city of Munich. It aims to improve air quality and reduce traffic noise. The Volvo FE Electric with roll-off container for the waste management company Munich (AWM) is the first fully electric truck in Bavaria supporting waste disposal and the first of its kind in all of Germany.
(Ismaning/Munich) The municipal waste management company AWM uses the fully electric roll-off truck Volvo FE Electric in the city area for the container logistics of recycling yards. Due to its flexible design, the E-Truck can accommodate various containers as needed. For this specific application, the vehicle has a range of approximately 120 kilometers. This allows the 27-ton truck to operate safely and independently throughout the area of the state capital Munich. Four lithium-ion batteries with 50 kWh each provide the necessary energy. The E-Truck can be charged in different ways: either via an AC charging process with up to 22 kW or, if speed is essential, via a DC charging process with up to 150 kW. The battery can then be fully charged in about one hour.
Fully electric is the next step
“In 2012, we put a comparable vehicle with a roll-off container and diesel hybrid technology from Volvo Trucks into operation. We had very good experiences with it. Now taking the next step with this fully electric truck is the logical consequence, especially since the collaboration with Volvo Trucks has worked excellently,” says Reinhold Bauer, fleet manager of AWM. With the Volvo FE Electric model series, the working environment for drivers improves thanks to the low noise level and vibration-free drive. The electric trucks can be charged either at the power grid or at fast charging stations. The battery capacity of the series E-Trucks from Volvo can be adjusted according to needs, allowing ranges of up to 300 kilometers.
Support for sustainability goals
“With our electrically powered trucks, we want to support our customers in their transport tasks and their ambitious sustainability goals. We clearly aim to pave the way for our industry towards a sustainable future,” says Manfred Nelles, spokesperson for Volvo Trucks. The new addition to AWM also impresses with state-of-the-art disposal technology. The structure is the roll-off container RL 18 from Meiller. Thanks to the electrification of the E-Volvo, the auxiliary drive can now be controlled and used as needed. This means that it only runs when it is actually needed. The structure is controlled with the new Meiller i.s.a.r.-control 3 remote control. This allows drivers to operate the roll-off container from a safe distance with significantly better visibility. Due to the fully electric drive, the structure is now also significantly quieter, as the hydraulic pump only runs when the roll-off container is actually in operation. As a result of the energy savings, the range for the truck increases.
