Nov 20, 2020 at 2:30 PMFliegl Vehicle Construction supplies the window and door manufacturer Gugelfuss GmbH with another special vehicle. Due to the specific requirements for the vehicles, Gugelfuss operates its own fleet. This consists entirely of Fliegl vehicles, as the vehicle manufacturer can deliver the operational extras directly from the factory.
(Triptis/Elchingen) There are not many logistics companies that specialize in window and glass transport. Therefore, Gugelfuss GmbH operates its own truck fleet in Elchingen to ensure optimal delivery of its products. The family-owned company primarily delivers its windows, doors, and facades in southern Germany, occasionally also to Alsace or Luxembourg. Managing Director Martin Gugelfuss has now ordered a new articulated truck from Fliegl, consisting of a sliding curtain body for the motor vehicle and a two-axle pivot trailer. “Actually, the vehicle was planned as a replacement purchase, but we currently have so many orders that we can operate the other truck in parallel for a few more months,” Gugelfuss is pleased to report.
Fliegl Delivers Custom Requests from the Factory
“With other manufacturers, a brand new vehicle would immediately have to go back to the workshop to install the rails in the floor. With Fliegl, we get that directly from the factory,” reports the manager. This refers to the C-glass rails, in which the reusable frames for window transport are secured, making the vehicles so special. Additional load securing options ensure the safe transport of the sensitive cargo.
Both the motor vehicle and the trailer are equipped with Fliegl’s proven and robust spring curtain tarpaulin with high-strength embedded spring steel strips and welded horizontal and vertical straps. “This allows us to do without the insert slats, which saves a lot of time during loading and unloading,” says Gugelfuss. The sliding cover can be moved from back to front, and the EcoLift roof can be easily raised by 380 mm thanks to gas pressure support – allowing for quick and safe loading with a forklift. The forklift is always on board, parked at the rear in the 1 m long fork pockets and can weigh up to 1.8 t, with the counterweight embedded in the front wall.
Safety Thanks to Rearview Camera
The motor vehicle is a Mercedes-Benz Actros of the latest generation, whose mirror cams and digital interior mirrors offer a special feature: “We can also feed in the image from the rearview camera and display it directly in the cockpit,” explains Martin Gugelfuss. The added value of the rearview camera was recognized by the Gugelfuss drivers back in 2019 when they put a long truck into operation that is equipped with a camera. Thanks to the rearview camera system, maneuvering damage is now avoided, and two additional LED headlights at the rear provide the necessary light in the dark.
The long truck is now mainly used for night shifts between two Gugelfuss plants that are 400 km apart. On average, this results in around 80,000 “saved” kilometers per year.
11 Truck Trains in the Fleet
Almost all of the 11 truck trains in the fleet are purchased, as the company operates them longer due to their special equipment than is typical with leasing.
