Nov 18, 2020 at 12:00 PMAs of November 2020, the Swiss transport company Paul Leimgruber AG, based in Pratteln near Basel, has started rail transport of containers from Basel to Oensingen in the Swiss Midlands. The goal is to save CO2 emissions in the interest of sustainability. The route is quite short at just under 53 km.
(Basel) Since early November 2020, Paul Leimgruber AG has been offering rail transport of containers from Basel to Oensingen. Basel is the container capital of Switzerland. Containers shipped from the North Sea ports as well as from Italian ports arrive predominantly in Basel and are integrated into the Swiss transport system here. Leimgruber distributes containers nationwide to their recipients or collects export containers and brings them to Basel for loading onto Rhine ships and trains.

To make transport more efficient and to utilize the strengths of both modes of transport, Leimgruber has switched part of the container transport from Basel to the Midlands to the low-emission train as of November 2020. The containers are transshipped at the Basel arrival terminal onto a train wagon, which then goes to the regional terminal in Oensingen during the night. The driver can pick up the container there and deliver it in the region.
These already daily operations are being gradually expanded. By using the train, Leimgruber can further reduce unnecessary road kilometers and relieve the already well-utilized terminals around Basel as well as the traffic. In addition to the economic benefits, there is also an ecological advantage: this shift to rail results in lower CO2 emissions, which ultimately benefits the environment and society as a whole.
