Oct 5, 2020 at 7:43 PMThe environmental program ‘Dachser Emission-Free Delivery’ ensures sustainable delivery of freight shipments in downtown Freiburg. This is implemented with vehicles such as the Fuso eCanter, Streetscooter, and cargo bikes, all of which are electric vehicles. Other cities and regions in Europe are set to follow suit.
(Kempten/Freiburg i. Br.) Fuso eCanter, Streetscooter, and cargo bike – with this purely electric vehicle mix, Dachser will now deliver exclusively emission-free to the core of downtown Freiburg. This reduces CO2 emissions per shipment by 26 percent across the entire transport process.
For emission-free delivery, a fully electric 7.5-ton light truck of the type FUSO eCanter will be used.
Dachser has designated the postal code area 79098, which includes the districts of Altstadt, Neuburg, and Oberau, as an emission-free delivery area for downtown Freiburg. In this zone, which covers approximately 1.5 square kilometers, B2B and B2C customers will now receive their freight shipments exclusively emission-free. “After successfully using an electrically assisted cargo bike for two years, this is now the logical next step to contribute to improved air and quality of life in downtown Freiburg,” says Michael Gaudlitz, General Manager of Dachser Logistics Center Freiburg.
Other Metropolitan Regions in Europe to Follow
“In selected metropolitan regions in Europe, we will gradually identify hotspots in the city centers over the next two years and implement the Dachser Emission-Free Delivery concept,” says Stefan Hohm, Corporate Director Corporate Solutions, Research & Development, Dachser.
For emission-free delivery, a fully electric 7.5-ton light truck of the type FUSO eCanter will be used, with which goods will either be delivered directly or delivered to the city-center microhub of the partner VeloCarrier/Roc-Ket Cargo Bikes. There, smaller shipments will be transshipped for delivery tours using an electrically assisted cargo bike or a Streetscooter. The charging station for the electric truck is located at the Dachser branch in southern Freiburg, in the Breisgau industrial park, which, like all locations of the logistics service provider in Germany, sources its electricity 100 percent from hydropower.
Overall, this reduces CO2 emissions per shipment by an average of 26 percent, while fine dust emissions decrease by about 47 percent and nitrogen oxides by about 41 percent, considering that the pre-transport and main transport are conventionally done by diesel.
Electric Vehicle Mix for City Distribution
The innovative city logistics concept ‘Dachser Emission-Free Delivery’ is based on a modular toolbox for city deliveries. In Germany, in addition to Freiburg, the Stuttgart city center has been served emission-free by Dachser since 2018, and in Oslo, the logistics provider has recently also adopted Dachser Emission-Free Delivery. “This is a promising start, but we still have a long way to go, especially regarding the availability of trucks with alternative drives,” explains Stefan Hohm, Corporate Director Corporate Solutions, Research & Development, who is responsible for the City Distribution innovation project at Dachser. At the same time, he remains optimistic: “In selected metropolitan regions in Europe, we will gradually identify hotspots in the city centers over the next two years and implement the Dachser Emission-Free Delivery concept.”
