Oct 4, 2020 at 12:23 PMDB Cargo launches a brand new single wagon product with EVplus between Hamburg and Cologne: From now on, transport will be door-to-door. Even customers without their own rail connection will gain access to the railway. The transport takes place overnight, and DB Cargo organizes everything from A to Z.
(Mainz) Pickup during the day, delivery the next morning – for the customer Coca-Cola, DB Cargo has been transporting goods in overnight express from Hamburg to Cologne since the end of August. Always combined, in the local area with trucks, over long distances by rail, directly to the warehouse. This is made possible by the new door-to-door product EVplus.
EVplus also provides customers without their own rail connection access to the railway and enables the transport of individual shipments – with short transit times. The customer does not have to worry about anything: DB Cargo takes care of the complete organization of the service, including the pre- and post-haulage of the trucks and also provides the EV equipment such as 45′ swap bodies.
“EVplus combines the advantages of the dense single wagon network with the flexibility of the road,” explains Daniel Knaus, project manager of EVplus. “We act as end-to-end logistics providers for the customer. We provide both the equipment and the transport via rail and road. In this way, we get closer to the customer and can better respond to their needs.”
Demand for this service is high
What started with Coca-Cola is also available to all other customers. Because the demand is high. “We see a strong need for intermodal solutions among our customers, especially in the consumer goods market. At the same time, the offer is also a fast and sustainable alternative to trucks for other industries. Many customers do not have their own tracks, and we want to enable them access to the railway with EVplus,” explains Knaus.
The locations are also to be gradually expanded: In addition to Hamburg and Cologne, all nine major marshalling yards and shunting centers will be linked with EVplus. The goal: to shift about 170,000 trucks per year from road to rail by 2030.
