Sep 29, 2020 at 11:18 AMDeutsche Post DHL Group has identified alternative biofuels as an important lever to reduce the environmental impact of sea freight. DHL Global Forwarding is the first logistics provider to offer truly climate-neutral sea freight shipments at no additional cost. Thanks to the use of advanced biofuels, the CO2 footprint for DHL Global Forwarding’s customers is also reduced.
(Bonn) DHL Global Forwarding, the air and sea freight specialist of Deutsche Post DHL Group, will neutralize CO2 emissions for all its less-than-container load (LCL) sea freight transports starting January 1, 2021. As one of the leading sea freight carriers and in line with the group-wide “Mission 2050” for zero-emissions logistics of Deutsche Post DHL Group, DHL aims to lead by example in the transformation towards clean and sustainable sea freight. The CO2 compensation for all LCL shipments will be achieved through the use of marine biofuels in cooperation with existing and new partners.
“To successfully combat climate change, the transport sector needs real decarbonization. For us at DHL Global Forwarding, sustainable fuels are a crucial lever to change the fuel mix in sea freight and ultimately reduce CO2 emissions. That is why we have decided to neutralize CO2 emissions for all our LCL shipments. Even though we are in uncertain times due to the pandemic, we must ensure that we do not lose sight of climate protection and sustainability,” said Tim Scharwath, CEO of DHL Global Forwarding, Freight.
New Service Also Helps Customers
DHL Global Forwarding’s new green service is not only another important milestone on the Deutsche Post DHL Group’s path to emission-free logistics, but it also helps customers reduce their own CO2 footprint. At no additional cost to customers, the fossil heavy fuel oil that is normally consumed on board certain container ships is replaced with sustainable biofuel. This achieves real carbon dioxide neutrality. The ecological benefits are quantified, and the CO2 savings are clearly attributed to the customers. In addition, DHL Global Forwarding operates a GoGreen evaluation program for carriers, allowing the transport service provider to select carriers based on defined environmental and sustainability criteria.
Deutsche Post DHL Group has identified alternative biofuels as an important lever to reduce the environmental impact of sea freight. It is crucial that they are produced sustainably and do not compete for agricultural land with food production, for example. The waste-based biofuels must meet strict sustainability standards to be considered the cleanest biofuels currently available on the market.
Global GoGreen Program
The global GoGreen program of Deutsche Post DHL Group is based on the principles of “Burn less” (consume less energy) and “Burn clean” (use clean energies) and also aims to improve the CO2 efficiency of the transport network, fleet, and real estate. This includes reducing energy consumption, increasing the use of renewable energy sources and fuels, optimizing transport networks, and pick-up and delivery routes. Additionally, subcontractors are encouraged to purchase low-emission vehicles, and employees are reminded to consider environmental protection in training and other activities.
