(Mannheim) Alpensped is launching its climate initiative 50/50 in September: From then on, customers will have the opportunity to have their transports carried out in a climate-neutral manner. The special feature: The medium-sized logistics company covers 50 percent of the compensation costs – for every ton of CO2 generated.
The Mannheim family business Alpensped has been a pioneer in green logistics for years. Certified according to ISO 14064 (CCF = Corporate Carbon Footprint) and DIN EN 16258 (TCF = Transport Carbon Footprint), the management of the medium-sized company has been operating climate-neutrally since 2011 and has been compensating part of its transport services through climate protection projects of the non-profit organization myclimate since 2015. In 2019, Alpensped increased its compensation performance to 10 percent. With the now starting climate initiative, the family business is taking another step forward and involving customers in its commitment to climate protection.
“The effects of climate change are now felt worldwide,” says Managing Director Christian Faggin. Therefore, it is more urgent than ever to develop ways, means, and strategies to protect the environment. This concerns everyone, and everyone must contribute. “As a logistics service provider, we see a special responsibility here. That is why we developed the 50/50 initiative,” says Faggin.
This gives customers the opportunity to have their goods transported climate-neutrally by Alpensped – whether as part or full loads or as special and heavy transport. The resulting CO2 emissions are compensated by Alpensped through the certified Gold Standard quality project “Less Deforestation of Rainforests Thanks to Efficient Cookers in Kenya”. And shares the compensation costs with its customers. “For me, this is an investment in the future,” says Christian Faggin. “This way, we contribute to ensuring that future generations can live happily and successfully in an intact environment.”
Working Completely Climate-Neutral by 2025

In addition to the costs, the effort for Alpensped customers is also manageable. The total amount of compensation is already visible in the offer. A correct final billing of the transport order with the actual CO2 emissions incurred will then take place with the invoice. How well this model works has been impressively confirmed by the pilot project with MATSEN CHEMIE AG. Alpensped has compensated all transports it carried out for the Hamburg chemical company in 2019, totaling 43 tons of CO2. “We hope that many customers will follow the example of MATSEN CHEMIE AG. Our big goal is to work completely climate-neutrally by 2025,” emphasizes Faggin. To achieve this goal, the logistics service provider is increasingly focusing on reduction in addition to compensation. The latest vehicles are in use for Alpensped, and the first trucks with gas drive are being tested. Furthermore, the shift of transport from road to rail is being advanced. “On the route Ludwigshafen – Verona, this is already functioning satisfactorily, but here too we want and need to achieve more,” concludes Faggin.
