(Bonn) DHL Industrial Projects, the division of DHL Global Forwarding specializing in complex project logistics, transport solutions through ocean chartering, and heavy cargo transport, supports the lithium company Livent in expanding its production facility in El Salar del Hombre Muerto in the Argentine province of Catamarca. The scope of services includes international transport, ocean charters for prefabricated, modular cargo, air freight services, as well as storage and inland transport for one of the leading companies in lithium extraction and the production of lithium compounds. Prefabricated modules and other materials are transported from Asia, North America, and various locations in Europe to South America. DHL was selected as a partner for this project due to its experience in previous projects in Latin America and its excellent service.
Challenging Conditions
“In logistics, especially under challenging conditions, it’s about expertise, flexibility, and reliability. All of this is part of our DNA,” says Ryan Foley, CEO of DHL Industrial Projects. “For this project, it was particularly important to implement special health and safety measures for all involved and to work closely with the local population. We expanded our personnel services and, for example, offered oxygen tests for our drivers as well as shuttle services for the employees. DHL Industrial Projects has once again proven that we are the provider of choice – even when the air gets thin.”
DHL has been commissioned by Livent with numerous services for their production facility at over 4,000 meters above sea level. These range from chartering and transporting bulky cargo to a shuttle service to the site for staff. Factors such as extreme weather conditions, lack of oxygen, and limited phone reception, to name a few, require the highest HSE standards (Health Safety Environment) and additional safety precautions for employees.
Control Tower in Buenos Aires
The DHL team at the Livent sites ensured excellent service at all times. Satellite phones were used to ensure connectivity throughout the transport chain. Additionally, DHL provided support in adhering to safety standards. For instance, the blood oxygen saturation of drivers was regularly monitored. Employing the local population and developing local suppliers is a high priority for Livent. DHL was happy to support this initiative and organized a shuttle service for employees to their respective workplaces. Furthermore, DHL promoted the visibility of local suppliers involved in the project development. All measures were monitored by a central Control Tower in Buenos Aires, which improved the end-to-end processes.
Livent is one of the largest manufacturers of lithium compounds and a leader in lithium extraction and purification. The raw material is used in various fields, especially in batteries for e-mobility, making it an important component in the development of mobility solutions and the transition to green energy. “We look forward to continuing our collaboration with DHL Industrial Projects. The company brings exactly the expertise we need for our complex and demanding projects. Additionally, DHL has the necessary flexibility and connectivity to reliably support our business,” says Karen Flynn, Head of Procurement at Livent. “Our shared vision of a more sustainable future is another plus.” Photos: © DHL Projectswww.dpdhl.com
