To this end, DB Cargo is expanding its offerings and wants to become a provider of complete logistics chains. The company aims to offer customers more services. Existing services, such as block train services, single wagon services, and combined transport will be expanded.
(Mainz) With a new strategy, DB Cargo is going on the offensive. Nine months after her appointment, freight transport board member Dr. Sigrid Nikutta has presented a green future concept. The core of the realignment: DB Cargo is increasingly focusing on rail logistics and aims to return to a growth path. To this end, the company is expanding its business to become a provider of complete logistics chains. Customers of Deutsche Bahn’s rail freight transport will thus be offered significantly more services in the future. DB Cargo is enlarging its traditional business model with the sectors of block train transport, single wagon transport, and combined transport to include services in rail logistics. By the middle of the 2020s at the latest, DB Cargo aims to continuously become a rail logistics provider in its home market of Germany and in Europe and to be sustainably profitable again.
DB Cargo CEO Dr. Sigrid Nikutta: “We are transferring the load of 25 million trucks from the road to the climate-friendly rail every year. The new rail logistics will contribute significantly to this. We will convince our customers with much simpler access to rail and attractive offers in Germany, Europe, and Asia.”
Benefiting from Megatrends
DB Cargo is also benefiting from metatrends: A growth of 30 percent is forecasted for the entire freight transport market by 2030. More and more industrial settlements are being established in Eastern Europe that are connected by rail. Here, DB Cargo has ideal conditions, as the company already has the strongest network of all freight railways in Europe.
Dr. Nikutta: “Our customers want to drastically reduce their ecological footprint. CO2-free supply chains are only possible with rail freight transport. This secures jobs for our approximately 30,000 employees and gives the good feeling of making an active contribution to climate protection. Rail remains the focus at DB Cargo.”
DB Cargo is also continuing to grow in its core business: The single wagon transport is being strengthened due to its significant economic importance. For example, a new express connection from Hamburg to Cologne has been rolling overnight with consumer goods and food for several weeks now. More routes will follow.
Combined Transport is being expanded
To facilitate access to rail, the number of national and international terminals and the presence in ports will be expanded across Europe in combined transport – the linking of road and rail. Additional trains are already running from Antwerp to the Ruhr area. From the end of 2020, Europe’s largest ports, Rotterdam and Antwerp, will be even more strongly integrated into DB Cargo’s network.
The largest growth in block train transport is taking place in the European transport corridors. Here, DB Cargo will offer even more customer-specific solutions than before – supported by strong offer management and a powerful in-house production, as successfully practiced in the automotive sector.
DB Cargo is the number one in rail freight transport on the European continent with around 4,200 rail connections and activities in 17 European countries. The company has around 82,000 freight cars and 2,700 locomotives.
