Aug 14, 2020 at 7:04 AMDB Schenker is focusing on sustainable urban logistics in Oslo and is deploying a Volvo FL Electric Truck for this purpose. The Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg welcomed the first vehicle for DB Schenker together with CEO Jochen Thewes. Ten more trucks of the same type have already been ordered.
(Essen/Oslo) With the integration of a new Volvo FL Electric Truck into the E-fleet of the sustainable city distribution center “Oslo City Hub”, DB Schenker achieves its self-imposed goal of conducting its urban logistics in Oslo without direct emissions by 2020. The first vehicle was unveiled today by Norway’s Prime Minister Erna Solberg. She thanked DB Schenker for its efforts towards more environmentally friendly transport solutions. The introduction of the new vehicle type is financially supported by Enova, Norway’s state energy agency. Norway’s first series-produced 16-ton electric truck enables DB Schenker to operate logistics in Oslo and regionally beyond in a fully sustainable manner.
Erna Solberg, Prime Minister of Norway, said at the unveiling of the new truck in Oslo: “When it comes to new green technology, we rely on ambitious and innovative players like DB Schenker. I want to commend you for the innovative path that goes beyond the use of electric trucks. With the support of Enova, significant investments in electric vehicles, and a centrally located logistics terminal, you are paving the way.”
Continuously Improving Footprint
Jochen Thewes, CEO of DB Schenker, added: “We are firmly committed to continuously improving our ecological footprint. DB Schenker is working on more environmentally friendly and clean logistics solutions to support our customers in their sustainability goals. With the new Volvo FL Electric Truck and the support from Enova at our Oslo City Hub, we can now prove that emission-free operation in urban traffic is possible. We are proud to realize an industry-leading solution to protect our environment and contribute to the larger goal of a climate-neutral society.”
The Volvo FL Electric Truck will operate in Oslo with a capacity for a permissible total weight of 16 tons. It emits no direct emissions (referring to tank-to-wheel emissions, e.g., CO2 and nitrogen oxides), causes no engine noise, and meets the growing demand for urban transport solutions while reducing environmental impact. The truck will be powered largely by renewable energy from Norwegian hydropower, just like the Oslo City Hub.
10 More Electric Trucks Ordered for Urban Logistics
In total, DB Schenker has ordered eleven new electric trucks for urban logistics in Oslo. They will replace diesel-powered trucks. Symbolically for achieving the sustainability goal, the first of three Volvo FL Electric Trucks has been labeled “100% electric in Oslo”.
The Oslo City Hub was opened by DB Schenker in May 2019 in the center of the Norwegian capital. By the end of 2020, the green electricity fleet will comprise 23 vehicles, including electric delivery vans and e-bikes. Soon, around 800 shipments will be delivered daily in Oslo using an electric vehicle.
DB Schenker aims to reduce its global specific greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030 compared to 2006. The regional but successful demonstration of a sustainable concept for urban logistics is another milestone on this path.
