Aug 3, 2020 at 7:02 AMABB has laid the foundation for a new site in San Giovanni Valdarno (Tuscany), Italy, which will serve as a global competence and production center for charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. The 16,000 square meter facility is expected to begin operations by the end of 2021. The investment amounts to approximately 30 million US dollars.
(PressBox Baden/Switzerland) As a global leader in electric mobility solutions, ABB underscores its commitment to driving innovation in this rapidly growing sector with the investment of 30 million US dollars. ABB is already investing 10 million US dollars in the construction of a sustainable headquarters and research and development site for its global electric mobility activities. This facility is located on the campus of TU Delft in the Netherlands and is set to be officially opened later this year.
The new plant in Italy will manufacture the entire ABB portfolio of DC charging stations for electric vehicles, from home charging stations to systems for installation in public spaces and for urban public transport. The new site will further drive ABB’s growth and innovation in the field of electric mobility.
Milestone for Electric Mobility at ABB
Giampiero Frisio, head of ABB’s Smart Power division, said: “Today we are setting an important milestone for our electric mobility business. ABB has been driving progress in this sector for more than ten years. With this state-of-the-art facility, we are significantly contributing to accelerating the global transition to emission-free electric mobility.”
The plant will be equipped with various digital ABB AbilityTM solutions. These will enable complete transparency and optimized manufacturing for each individual product and connect automated inventory management systems with the production areas. Additionally, automated systems for printed circuit board assembly and monitoring and testing systems will be connected to the factory’s IT system.
For R&D activities, there will be a separate area of 3,200 square meters focused on development and prototyping. ABB is concentrating on introducing innovative solutions, new software, and tools for product lifecycle management to fully integrate R&D activities into the manufacturing process, both internally and for external electronics development and manufacturing services.
Electric Vehicle Fleet for Employees
At the same time, the integration of renewable energy sources such as solar panels on the roof, an optimized heating and cooling system, and the introduction of an electric vehicle fleet for employees, logistics, sales, and service teams will help keep the environmental impact of the plant low.
Frank Mühlon, head of ABB’s global E-mobility Infrastructure Solutions business, said: “In light of the growing global demand for sustainable transportation solutions, we are ensuring with the new plant that ABB can meet this demand and remains the provider of choice for comprehensive electric mobility solutions.”
ABB has extensive experience in developing sustainable transportation solutions. The company has been active in the electric charging station market for more than ten years and has sold over 14,000 DC fast chargers in more than 80 countries to date. For its contribution to promoting sustainable transportation solutions on an international level, ABB was awarded the “Global E-mobility Leader 2019 Award.”
As the company recently announced, it will supply the charging technology for the Gen3 race cars of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, the first fully electric international motorsport racing series.
