Jun 30, 2020 at 8:00 AMThe parcel service provider DPD will start delivering packages by cargo bike in Hanau from July. Initially, one bike will be used, and if successful, at least one more will be added. A delivery by cargo bike is also planned for the Bessungen district in Darmstadt.
(Hanau) Together with the city of Hanau and Hanauer Parkhaus GmbH, DPD Germany has established a new micro-depot. Starting in early July, packages will be delivered locally emission-free from the Congress Park/Am Schwimmbad parking garage using a cargo bike. In the initial phase, a cargo bike of the type Rytle MovR will be used. Once this initial phase is successfully completed, another cargo bike will be added. At the same time, DPD Germany is also setting up a micro-depot for cargo bike deliveries in the Bessungen district of Darmstadt. These are the first projects of this kind for the international parcel and express service provider in the Rhine-Main metropolitan area.
Thanks to the collaboration with Hanauer Parkhaus GmbH, DPD now has a depot in a public city parking garage for the first time. Currently, two parking spaces are available there. The parking garage company has installed walls that separate the area from the regular parking section. An expansion is possible. Packages are delivered from the outside via a roll-up door using a transporter.
Starting with 400 Packages per Week
This first distribution station for packages also serves the city of Hanau to gather its own experiences for a future logistics concept for the city center.
For city councilor Morlock, “it is a goal in the development of the mobility concept and traffic development plan to reduce the number of motorized delivery traffic in the city center. Additionally, cargo bikes also allow for deliveries in pedestrian zones outside of normal delivery times.”
Starting in early July, parts of Hanau’s city center will be supplied with packages locally emission-free from the location at Heinrich-Fischer-Bad. These will be delivered in the morning, sorted into the cargo bike’s exchange container, and then delivered. Initially, around 400 packages will be delivered weekly to recipients in the city center. DPD expects that the package volume will at least double in the future.
Collaboration with the City of Hanau
“The city of Hanau has provided us with an optimal opportunity to implement another cargo bike project with these parking spaces. The location of the parking garage is ideally suited as it is centrally located in a delivery area with many private recipients and short distances,” says Gerd Seber, Group Manager City Logistics & Sustainability at DPD Germany. “At the same time, we are also expanding our expertise in the area of package handling and distribution from parking garages.”
The cooperation with the city of Hanau and Hanauer Parkhaus GmbH is another important step within the corporate strategy DrivingChange. DPDgroup has reduced its CO2 emissions by 15.2 percent since 2013. By 2025, a reduction of 30 percent is to be achieved.
The Hanauer Parkhausgesellschaft had approached several parcel delivery companies and eventually agreed with DPD after constructive discussions to establish such a micro-depot in the Brothers Grimm city. At the official opening in the Congress Park/Swimming Pool parking garage, Managing Director Markus Henrich thanked the company for its ecological commitment. He stated: “Citizens are increasingly ordering goods online, and parcel services provide a basic supply in municipalities. We are even more pleased that we have been able to partner with DPD, which wants to contribute to the climate protection concept of the city of Hanau.”
DPD Continuously Expanding Cargo Bike Fleet
DPD has already stationed cargo bikes in various German cities. It has been shown that targeted use of environmentally friendly electric bicycles can contribute to increased efficiency in package delivery, especially in areas with many private recipients and short distances. Even in dense city traffic, delivery personnel can move quickly, and lengthy parking searches are usually eliminated. DPD delivers packages by cargo bike in cities including Leipzig, Konstanz, Berlin, Heilbronn, and Nuremberg. Currently, DPD has 32 cargo bikes and 8 electric tricycles, known as TRIPL, stationed throughout Germany.
