Jun 25, 2020 at 7:30 AMIn recent years, DHL Express has seen a significant increase in import and export volumes at its Munich gateway. Therefore, DHL is investing 70 million euros in a new facility. The commissioning is expected to take place in 2022.
(Bonn/Munich) DHL Express Germany and Munich Airport GmbH (FMG) have signed a contract for the realization of a new cargo building at Munich Airport. The new building will be constructed on the site of the current parking lots P 80 and P 80 West and will have a gross floor area of more than 8,000 square meters. For the first time, the contract signing between the partners took place digitally, taking into account the current restrictions. DHL Express plans, constructs, and operates the new building and leases the land from FMG. Currently, the company already has hall space as a tenant in the existing cargo center of Munich Airport. The commissioning of its own site, which is six times larger, is planned for 2022.
Growth Required the New Construction
In recent years, DHL Express has seen a significant increase in import and export volumes at its Munich gateway. “This growth could not be accommodated by the existing building,” explains Markus Reckling, Managing Director of DHL Express Germany, the necessity of the 70 million euro investment project. “After we modernized and expanded our service center in Unterschleißheim for 13 million euros last year, the new construction of our gateway at the airport is the next step in the infrastructure plan, with which we clearly commit to our presence in the Munich region. Even in the currently difficult economic situation, we continue to invest consistently in the service for our customers, which is our top priority.”
Highest Security in Air Transport
The new gateway will feature direct airside access and two so-called PUD fingers (Pick-up and Delivery). Up to 65 delivery vehicles can be processed simultaneously at these points. This leads to a time advantage in pick-up and delivery, especially for customers in the Landsberg-Ingolstadt region. In addition, the new station will meet the security requirements of the Transported Asset Protection Association (TAPA) and will receive the globally recognized TAPA Class A certification as the highest security level in air transport. Airport CEO Jost Lammers welcomes the decision of the express service provider to consistently focus on growth at Munich Airport: “This is an important signal and a great vote of confidence for the Munich location, especially in these challenging times for aviation. The increased commitment from DHL Express will sharpen our profile as a logistics location and provide significant impulses for air freight traffic.”
