The facility for combined transport is located just a few hundred meters from the Hellmann branch in Lehrte and offers the service provider new opportunities for flexible transport planning.
(Osnabrück/Lehrte) From mid-June, Hellmann Worldwide Logistics will be the first customer to use the MegaHub in Lehrte. The facility for Combined Transport (CT) is operated by the MegaHub Lehrte operating company mbH, a subsidiary of the German Transshipment Company Rail-Road (DUSS). In the fast transshipment facility, loading units are transferred directly from trucks to trains and then transported to the destination with reduced transport times. The use of the MegaHub Lehrte enables the globally operating logistics service provider to combine routes more flexibly, consolidate the intermodal transport network in Germany and Europe, and thus contribute to improved supply security for its customers.
The new transshipment facility is located just a few hundred meters from the Hellmann branch in Lehrte. Shortened distances between the transshipment warehouse and the CT terminal allow for optimized processes in the pre- and post-haulage to rail transport. At the same time, Hellmann increases its capacities by significantly reducing loading and transport times. By avoiding around 40 truck trips daily between the U-warehouse and the previously used CT terminal in Hanover Linden, not only is CO2 emissions significantly reduced, but traffic in the Hanover city area is also alleviated.
Rail Junction Lehrte
At the rail junction in Lehrte, routes from Scandinavia, Poland, and the Benelux countries converge. The simultaneous good connection to road traffic due to the immediate proximity to the A2 and A7 offers Hellmann the opportunity to further expand combined transport and, in the future, offer additional trains – for example, between Hamburg and Nuremberg – via the MegaHub Lehrte. The shift of further road transports to rail also contributes to the compliance with the federal government’s climate package, which aims to increasingly shift transports from road to rail by 2030.
“Thanks to the new CT facility, we can link our previously singular train services into a network by recombining offered routes. This presents significant growth prospects for us as a company. At the same time, our customers benefit from the fact that we are expanding capacities on rail while also increasing our service quality,” said Dirk Baerbock, Head of Multimodal Solutions Europe, Hellmann Worldwide Logistics.
