May 20, 2020 at 12:23 PMThe cargo volume at Leipzig/Halle Airport (LEJ), Europe’s fifth-largest cargo hub, continues to grow during the Corona crisis. In April, cargo handling increased by seven percent compared to the same month last year, reaching approximately 107,671 tons.
(Leipzig/Halle, 18.05.2020) From January to April, the value rose by 0.6 percent compared to the previous year, totaling 404,987 tons. Leipzig/Halle is once again holding its ground amid the Corona crisis, in contrast to the nationwide trend. Nationwide, cargo tonnage in March was down by 11.7 percent.
The reason for the growth is primarily the high volume of shipments from the home carrier DHL. Additionally, there are extra charter flights from Aeroflot and Vietnam Airlines. In the midst of the Corona crisis, cargo charter volume increased by 25.6 percent in April. Many cargo flights are now also being conducted with passenger aircraft.
Optimal Conditions for Logistics Providers
In the current crisis situation, the importance of a functioning air traffic infrastructure for supplying the population is evident. Leipzig/Halle Airport has a 24-hour operating permit for cargo flights and a direct connection to the trans-European road and rail network in north-south and east-west directions. This provides Leipzig/Halle with ideal conditions for transporting goods by road and rail.
The runway system consists of two parallel runways, each 3,600 meters long, which can be used independently under CAT-III-b conditions.
Additionally, PortGround, a subsidiary of Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG specializing in aircraft and cargo handling, holds a CEIV-Pharma certification, enabling it to process time-sensitive and temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical shipments around the clock.
Since 2008, DHL has operated its European hub at this location. It is the largest within its global network, with an investment of 655 million euros in its construction. Furthermore, plans are currently underway to expand the infrastructure in the area used by DHL.
Leipzig/Halle Airport is also the home airport of AeroLogic, a joint venture between DHL Express and Lufthansa Cargo.
