(Frankfurt, 09.04.2020) Lufthansa Cargo is expanding the currently very limited air freight capacity between Europe and Asia in collaboration with Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines.
Currently, 14 flights per week are operated with large cargo aircraft of the Boeing 777F type, with a standard loading capacity of around 103 tons, between Frankfurt and mainland China. Starting from Easter, 35 weekly flights with Lufthansa passenger aircraft will be added exclusively for cargo transport. Since the cabin space of these aircraft can also be loaded with freight, this results in an average freight capacity of about 30 tons each in practice.
Specifically, there will be two daily connections from Frankfurt to Shanghai (PVG) and one daily connection to Beijing (PEK) with Airbus A330-300 aircraft. From Munich, one Airbus A350-900 will depart daily to Shanghai (PVG) and to Beijing (PEK).
To further increase the potential freight volume, especially for the transport of relatively light cargo such as protective masks, parts of the cabin equipment from initially four Lufthansa aircraft will be removed.
In Austria, Austrian Airlines will provide approximately 16 flights per week from Vienna Airport for cargo transport starting from Easter. Shanghai (PVG) will be served eight times, Beijing (PEK) five times, Penang (PEN) twice, and Xiamen (XMN) once a week. Passenger jets of the Boeing 767-300 and Boeing 777-200 types will be used.
