Mar 11, 2020 at 10:48 AMThe IHK Saarland presents its logistics report. Logistics companies require qualified professionals, sufficient space, and efficient transport infrastructure. The IHK aims to further improve all of this in Saarland, also due to the favorable geographical location of the region.
(Saarbrücken, 10.03.2020) Saarland is uniquely positioned due to its geographical location to handle, commission, and transport goods between Germany and Western Europe. This locational advantage and proximity to the French market have been responsible for numerous logistics company settlements and the expansion of logistics areas in recent years.” This was commented on by IHK Managing Director Dr. Heino Klingen regarding the recently presented IHK industry report on logistics.According to estimates by the IHK, approximately 37,500 people in Saarland are engaged in logistics activities. In addition to the approximately 12,000 employees in freight transport, there are over 20,000 logistics workers in industrial companies and trade. Logistics is more than just the transport from A to B; it serves as the central interface for the movement of goods within companies and beyond. In this context, the IHK industry report describes how the logistics sector and the associated supply chain in Saarland have developed in recent years. A particular focus is on the structure of the companies active in Saarland and their specialization in logistics activities demanded by the Saarland industrial production. At the same time, the Saarland logistics sector is currently facing significant challenges. “The shortage of skilled workers, dilapidated transport infrastructure, and the search for logistics space, alongside climate protection and the close integration with industrial production in Saarland, will influence the development of the sector. From the IHK’s perspective, it is therefore important that the state government takes the interests of Saarland logistics companies into account even more in its labor market, location, and industrial policies than it has so far,” said Klingen.
